Simple Woman's Daybook Apr. 15

For today, April 15...

Outside my window... It's snowing again! Big, fat, fluffy flakes. Joe and I are being lazy, watching movies, eating biscotti, reading... and healing!

I am thinking... You may have noticed I don't have a weekly menu. I realized last week (with some gentle help from The Geologist) that sometimes I just can't post every day. And that's all right! Some weeks I may still post every day, some weeks I may not. I plan to at least have a few posts a week, so I'm not going anywhere. Life is just getting a bit full to post daily without stress, and I need to be able to take a day or two off without feeling like I owe you guys an apology. I figure you'll probably stick around. :)

In the kitchen... I made a new batch of biscotti today, but you'll have to wait a bit for the recipe! Up this week: homemade tortillas and carnitas, and strawberry cream cheese stuffed french toast. Whew, that's a mouthful!

I am going... Tomorrow is officially the last adoption training session. After that, we have to take a First Aid/CPR class, then schedule our home study! It's getting so close... it's so exciting and terrifying all at once! Wednesday is choir, the first time I'll be able to go since our Easter concert. I hope they don't think I've flaked out!

I am wondering... why this winter has been so weird?! We got hardly any snow all winter, and as soon as march rolls around, we're getting dumped on every other week! I don't really mind, I love constantly changing weather. It's just odd. I was raised in the West, so I expect the odd Spring snowstorm, but this is outside my realm of experience.

I am reading... The Peach Keeper, by Sarah Addison Allen. She's one of my favorite new(ish) authors. The Sugar Queen is my favorite of her books. They're set in real times and places, with original, interesting characters and sprinkles of magic all through. She's a fantastic author who weaves words into images, tastes, and smells so captivating you'll think they're real. I love her!

I am learning... about the world of Doctor Who. I know I'm a latecomer to the party, and I'm not sure if I'll stay yet... I must admit the pilot episode of the new series (2005?) was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. Don't lynch me!! The next episode was MUCH better. Yes, I am lame, I'm skipping the original series. I just know so many people who love it so much, so I'm giving it a chance. I'll keep you posted :)

One of my favorite things... The books of Catherine Rayner. (Marie, are you two related?!) Her artwork is glorious. This picture is my favorite, from her book "Augustus and His Smile". She writes and illustrates children's books. I've even emailed her back and forth a few times! Someday I want to find this print, blow it up, and hang it on my boys' wall. Her stories are so sweet and original too! We love her.

I am thankful... that my husband knows me almost better than I know myself! He often seems to realize something is wrong before I do. I feel a bit sheepish, but I'm still grateful for his support and insight.

Something new about me... I used to be an artist. Really! I doodled on every page of notes, drew all over my hands, (my dad hated that) spent hours in my room sketching... I even won a prize for a watercolor once, a looooong time ago. Unfortunately, when you shelve a talent for years, it tends to fade. I suppose I've transferred my artistic sense to cooking... in some form... I do miss sketching though.

  1. The first episode of Doctor who is a little stupid, but it only gets better from there! Once I hit the second season, there was no going back for me.
So excited that you are so close to adopting! I'll keep you in my prayers!
I also love to imagine you on your lazy days, we just had one ourselves.

    1. I think I'll definitely make it through this season, so maybe I will get hooked! We should be officially certified in 3-4 months. Lots of paperwork and waiting and meeting workers in between. That's still pretty close!!
