Sour Cream Scones

Sometimes when things go wrong, everything still turns out right. Last night the Geologist and I got all dressed up, thrilled to be finally going to the temple for the first time in months! But, as we have done every time we have moved, we forgot to check the times, and arrived just as they were closing up. You'd think we'd learn!! Oh well. So on the spur of the moment, we went to see the newest Bond movie, Skyfall. Now, here's the deal. I have not been the biggest fan of the new 007 movies. They have missed the fun, clever, tongue-in-cheekiness that I loved in the old ones. They're perfectly good spy movies, but to me, Bond they are NOT!

This new one though... it was fantastic. I loved it. It was funny, and clever, and the action was awesomely over the top, and they ended up in this ridiculously gorgeous, melancholy location in winter Scotland. Holy cow and a half, that scenery... forget Daniel Craig, Scotland made me swoon!!! Anyway, I won't give anything important away, but my favorite detail was that he could shoot perfectly with his Dad's old hunting rifle. (That will make more sense when you go see it :) Oh, and lookee there! My Scottish Christmas music just came on. Talk about timing!!

And on the subject of timing, when we came out of the theater, it was snowing! And Christmas music is playing on the radio!! Magical. We stopped by a soul food restaurant, and I discovered that I do not like crayfish  Now I know! So I will not be sharing any crayfish recipes. Instead, we have scones on the menu, in honor of 007. This recipe comes from Yvonne at StoneGable, one of my favorite blogs. Top 3, actually! :)

Sour Cream Scones (adapted slightly from StoneGable)

2 cups flour
4 Tb sugar
1 Tb baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
5 Tb cold butter, cubed
1 cup sour cream
1 egg yolk

1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup sanding sugar

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line or grease a baking sheet, set aside.

Whisk together all the dry ingredients (sugar, salt, powder, soda, and flour). Cut into butter until all chunks are small than small peas. Whisk eggs and sour cream together in a small bowl, then stir into flour mixture until just combined. (You can also do all these steps in a food processor)

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until the dough comes together into a ball.

Gently pat the dough down into a 3/4 inch thick square shape.
With a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut into 4 squares.

Cut each small square diagonally, with an X, making 4 smaller triangles.
Transfer the 16 triangles onto baking sheet. Brush the tops of each scone with heavy cream and sprinkle it with sanding sugar.
Bake in preheated oven for 12 to 14 minutes until the bottoms of the scones are light brown.

Remove from oven, cool slightly on the sheet pan and then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Or eat warm!!
Perfect, flakey, buttery, classic scones. I love scones. I need to have tea parties, and eat scones and clotted cream. Have you ever tried clotted cream!? It's celestial. It's gloriously creamy decadentness... I've GOT to find some around here!!
The top is crunchy and sweet, the inside light and fluffy...
Flaky and fabulous. Simple, classic, and scrumptious. Tell me your mouth isn't watering!!

And they go amazingly well with homemade Apple Butter! :)

  2. I think I'm gonna make these for breakfast on this, my day off.

Also, it's funny that you loved the new Bond because Matt and I did not. We're Casino Royale devotees and have seen that one about a dozen times. This one I thought wasn't very Daniel-Craig-as-Bond-like, and it made him look pathetic, where in the other ones, M betraying him wouldn't be a big deal. He'd just break into her house and say a bunch of snarky comments and get on with it, not break into her house as a depressed drunk has-been.

Whoa, that was too much. You didn't ask for my analysis of the movie, but you got it!

    I wish I'd gotten as much enjoyment out of it as you did! (-;

  4. These look so tasty. I've never made scones before (I know), but I love sour cream baked goods, so this might be something I make in the near future, especially when I need to use up the rest of my sour cream.

  5. Scones were always my little sisters favorite thing to make when they were in the baking mood. Or when they were trying to escape from doing chores and "We're baking scones" was a good way to get Mom to assign cleaning the bathrooms to someone else. :P

  6. scones: heaven. crayfish: ew.
We seriously need to line up our top three scone recipes, and have a scone-off.. (a scoff?) Cause I want a "go-to" for my basic one, and then just worry about the flavors and add-ins. Know what I mean?
